U14 match report by Luke Courtney (and his dad)
The match between Killarney and Killorglin would always be a sight to see, no matter what the outcome. When Killorglin kicked off, the match began with a blistering pace, and the game seemed quite equal before Adam Lynch Herlihy following a break from new tigerish wing forward Muiris O Donoghue from Killarney opened the scoring, and with kicker Luke Courtney hitting the post from the conversion from the sideline.
The game rambled on, and then at the end of the first quarter, Luke Courtney from Killarney grabbed the ball and ran down the length of the wing to score a wonderful try. In the second quarter, Bryan Walsh from Killarney then broadened the gap between the teams by scoring two spectacular tries by running down the wing by utilising his dummy scissors. None of these tries would have been possible without the hard work of attacking forwards Dylan O Brien and Adam Lynch Herlihy, coupled with great defence from Alex Sheahan, MOTM Gearoid O Connor and his partner in crime, Eanna Coffey. Luke Courtney then converted the next three tries with flawless results.
The second half saw a better Killorglin outfit testing Killarney in midfield where centre Mark Kennelly and increasingly influential outhalf Senan Cotter were not found wanting. Killarney soaked up the pressure and got back on top with tries from Bryan Walsh again, a determined one from Dylan O Brien and one out of the top drawer from speedy winger Jack Donoghue, following a clever penalty from Cotter and fast hands from Courtney.
Killorglin scored a well deserved try in the dying moments. A word of praise for new referee Kyle Griffin who referred with authority and sympathy. The only sour note was a bad looking injury to speedster Leon Bowler who injured himself on the way to the try line. Despite his injury he bravely held on to the ball until the support arrived ( a la another great winger Dougie Howlett). We all wish him a speedy recovery. Next up for this side is a tricky home battle with Abbeyfeale.
