Statement from Dudley Phillips, Head of Referees
We have again been asked to clarify the IRFU stance around boots and studs. Please read and familiarise yourself with this statement in order to clarify any continued confusion around the issue of illegal boots/studs.
Until we receive clarification / instruction from World Rugby, we will request all referees to carry out a boot inspection that involves:
- Before the game begins a visual inspection of all boots must be carried out.
- If necessary, a physical inspection should be completed to confirm concern around condition of a stud(s).
During this inspection, the referee should look for sharp, rough edges or any other reason why the boot / stud could cause harm to others.
Any player’s boots considered (in the referee’s opinion) to pose a threat to the safety as outlined above must:
- Have the specific studs replaced
or
- If the above is not possible the boot(s) may not be worn
Thank you for your diligence and continued support in this matter.
Dudley Phillips
Head of Referees
