Ennis 31 Killarney 29

Killarney RFC's newest team - the U13 boys - got a second run out last Sunday 24th November. A panel of 25 travelled to Ennis to take on another team in red and black. As before, we structured the game into 3 thirds to allow us to rotate the players - and ensure everyone got a chance to play, and to let the coaches move players around between positions.

We opened brightly and scored off a ruck close to the Ennis line when scrum half Senan Cotter dived over as Ennis neglected to put a pillar to defend the ruck. Daire Kingston added an excellent second when good hands gave him the ball in space and he was able to outpace the Ennis defence and score under the posts - with Bryan Walsh adding the conversion. Ennis came back into the game and got a score in the corner when the Killarney defence got way too narrow.

With the first third completed - we were able to make a bunch of changes to give subs a run. Ennis profited from their own and our re-organisation and scored 2 quick tries but we responded with a try of our own through Bryan Walsh.

Into the third period, we went - a few more changes restored some of the lads who had played in the first period and gave a rest to those who'd played both periods 1 and 2. Ennis scored a fourth try but we responded with a try under the posts - expertly converted by Senan Cotter. We landed a fifth try through the returning Daire Kingston - good, simple passing put him away on the right and he showed good awareness to reach a long arm out to place the ball over line. Ennis then grabbed another try in the corner that was sufficient to win the day.

A narrow defeat maybe but we succeeded in accomplishing our main objectives in getting the those new to 15-a-side rugby on the pitch and getting everyone a decent run-out. It's good to see lads beginning to learn by playing together and developing their positional awareness. Hopefully, we're setting up a structure for next year's U14 team. It was also good to establish friendly links with Ennis RFC.
