Match report - Ian Harrington
Played at home on a cold but beautiful morning for rugby, Killarney U14s recorded a 5-29 loss to table toppers Abbeyfeale last Sunday. Killarney who were missing several players put in a brave and never-say-die performance which saw them 10 – 5 down at the break but ultimately the pressure exerted by the superior side and the physical stature of the visitors culminated in the inevitable match winning tries which were also converted superbly.
Killarney scored the game’s opening try through Josh Coffey. Stephen Dalton’s running throughout was notable, along with Cathan Harrington’s and Shane O’Sullivan’s relentless work at the breakdown. Donncha Coffey and Gearóid Sugrue were consistent in their selfless and determined tackling on behalf of the team. They were aided by some great carrying by Thomas Chambers and notable contributions from subs Alfie Barrett and Dara Stack.
Notwithstanding some of the bravery shown by Killarney players, the ability of the Abbeyfeale full-back Cody Grainey to follow up his long-range kicks proved insurmountable though credit must be given to the attitude of the Killarney boys, who spent the final few mins of the match attacking the Abbeyfeale line, looking for a late consolation try, but it was not to be.
A well-deserved victory by a strong Abbeyfeale side in a sporting contest which was very well refereed by Fergal Courtney.
